History of West Noble American Legion Post 243
Founded on January 30, 1920, West Noble American Legion Post 243 in Ligonier, Indiana, has a rich history of service to veterans and the community. The post began its activities by meeting in Ligonier's City Hall. By May 5, 1920, it had leased a room above the Weir and Crowley Hardware Store, marking its first dedicated meeting space. That same year, the Ladies Auxiliary was organized, with Mrs. Glade E. Rupert elected as president, supporting the post's mission and activities.
Throughout the 1920s, Post 243 was active in organizing community events, including indoor fairs, homecomings, carnivals, and minstrel shows. In April 1922, the post established a rifle club, and by 1926, it had taken over the Ligonier city ball team, leading them to a successful season. The post also hosted the 12th District Convention in 1927, showcasing its leadership and organizational capabilities.
A significant milestone occurred on July 4, 1928, when Post 243 dedicated a captured German anti-aircraft gun as a war memorial, placing it beside the Town Hall. This act symbolized the post's commitment to honoring veterans and preserving history. Additionally, in September 1928, the post, in collaboration with the Lions Club, sponsored an Air Circus at Walker Field, highlighting its role in community engagement and support for veterans.
In recent years, Post 243 has continued to serve the community and advocate for veterans' rights. Notably, in 2021, the post successfully challenged Indiana's statewide smoking ban, asserting its status as a private club and securing an exemption for its members. This legal victory underscored the post's ongoing commitment to defending the rights and freedoms of its members.
Today, West Noble American Legion Post 243 remains a vital institution in Ligonier, Indiana, dedicated to supporting veterans and fostering community spirit. Its century-long history reflects a steadfast commitment to service, advocacy, and community involvement.
